Friday Five | It's Game Time!
It’s game time!
Are you ready for GirlTrek’s Weekend of Radical Welcome?
Women from across the country have dropped their pins on the GirlTrek map and will be out in their neighborhoods in superhero blue to let sisters know they have a home in the GirlTrek movement.
It’s not too late to join in solidarity. Just drop the pin of where you will be walking here. Instructions can be found here. It’s especially important that those of you who never thought of yourself as “official” GirlTrek leaders, know that all you have to do to get “certified” (you know we love to be official!) is take a 15-minute walk with Morgan virtually. Just put your sneakers on, click here and in 15 minutes you are an official GirlTrek Crew Leader who is ready to lead any GirlTrek walk.
The women who have said, “Yes! I will be out in my neighborhood,” are everyday women, volunteers, dedicated servants, and sister-friends who believe in this work and want to be a part of making another Black woman feel loved.
Thank you! We are full of deep gratitude.
As you walk, we know that the women who will walk with you, your neighbors, your friends, and your family will have questions about what you are doing. To help you answer them, we have prepared your top five Welcome Walk talking points. Screengrab them, print them out if you want, and feel confident that you are representing the largest health movement in America for Black women and that your own life, how you live, and the fact that you showed up this weekend is your message.
GirlTrek Welcome Walks
Top Five Talking Points
GirlTrek is the largest health movement in America for Black women. We have over a million + members who walk, talk, and solve problems together. This Juneteenth weekend, women in the movement are hosting welcome walks to connect with sisters in their neighborhoods and let them know they are welcome here in GirlTrek.
GirlTrek is free, and you don’t have to wait to get started. We encourage every new woman who walks this weekend to keep walking and complete the Jumpstart Challenge. When she’s completed five walks from the challenge, she can claim a free GirlTrek t-shirt. When she’s completed 21 walks from the challenge in 30 days, she will earn her official pair of GirlTrek golden shoelaces.
GirlTrek women organize their own walking Crews. We say you + one other woman = a Crew. We have walking crews in 1,000 Black neighborhoods and want them in every neighborhood where Black women live. Everything you need to know about starting your Crew is in our field guide.
We walk because it’s the single most powerful thing a woman can do for her health. From the science-backed data showing that walking regularly is a powerful intervention that improves physical and mental health to the historical legacy of walking for change, we believe in the power of walking as a transformative tool for Black women looking to get active and stay connected to their communities.
Our sisterhood is our superpower, and we share our walks and testimonies using #GirlTrek so that other women can be inspired and know that they do not walk this road alone.
Additional GirlTrek FAQs can be found here.
While you’re out representing this weekend, we’ve got two easy ways for you to invite women to the movement! 1) Our new QR Wallet code. Just download it on your phone, and when you see a sister this weekend, you can show it to her, and she will be connected instantly! Instructions can be found here. 2) Have women text Join to 46696.
Also, 10 Welcome Walks from across the country will receive swag bags equipped with products created for melanated skin, gifted by our friends Coppertone as part of our #TogetherWeShine partnership. We are committed to community, wellness, and sun safety. Most importantly, encouraging Black women to get outside and seize the sun!
Ready for this weekend? We leave you with a few of our favorite photos from this week just to show you some of the faces of the women who will be out this weekend as a part of our national welcome crew!
Be inspired.
Use #GirlTrek so that we know you are out there.
It’s a fact that many women’s lives will be changed and saved because of making them feel welcome here.
Thank you for that.
