The GirlTREK app is here!

Sis,

I’ll tell you what freedom is.

It’s two women mobilizing a million women to walk, and then those million women sharing their time, love, and genius to help us ignite a mass movement for health justice.

It’s those million women now being able to go to the app store—today—and download GirlTREK Underground, the beta version of our first ever mobile app, a tool, a destination, a safe space, an ecosystem of healing that will unite Black women from Sacramento to Soweto, from Mississippi to Martha’s Vineyard, and everywhere in between.

It’s almost like Kendrick at the Forum, but bigger if you can imagine what’s possible when Black women prioritize their own needs in mass.

It’s years in the making.

It’s the hard work of so many of you come to life.

It’s only the first version, with many more features being rolled out over the coming months.

It’s our offering. A contribution to the culture.

But it will only be as active and as powerful as YOU help us make it.

Please, sis. We need you now. Today. To download the app. This weekend we need you to join us in the streets and take at least one walk to help us christen this new platform and to help us open up the road to freedom so that our friends and family can walk with us.

We believe that we can log a million miles collectively on the GirlTREK Underground by Labor Day weekend.

We believe that there are at least 10,000 of you—internally we’ve been calling you the Harriets of your neighborhoods—who could put in 100 miles by the end of summer and get us to the goal.

Are you with us?

Download the app here (the iOS version is available now; the Android version is coming soon).

Current features include:

  • Trekker Trailhead for quick access to start and track your walks.

  • Badges inspired by Black history and culture that you can earn when you walk.

  • Concrete Curriculum with inspiring podcasts and meditations designed to turn your steps into more than a walk.

  • Asphalt Affirmations from GirlTREK headquarters and testimonials from members for daily motivation and inspiration.

  • Campaign Central with GirlTREK campaigns and calls-to-action.

This means you can now track your walks, earn badges and connect with other women in the movement all on one app. Our first mission is to log 1,000,000 collective miles in the app by Labor Day. Every walk you take counts.

Once you download the app and create an account, take a minute to explore this new space designed just for us. There's a navigation bar at the bottom of the screen where you can move from page to page. On your next walk, start listening to the first season of Black History Bootcamp, or listen to our curated playlist Freedom Flow to get your heart pumping. Be sure to press “Start” in the app to log your miles, and then press "Finish" when you're done.

To celebrate this big news, tomorrow you can swipe right and log a walk with us at 10AM ET/7AM PT live on the Sisterhood Saturday call, where we will be joined by Ms. Ernestine “Tina” Martin Wyatt, the great-great-great-grandniece of Harriet Tubman. Dial (646) 876 9923,,734464325#.

Ms. Tina is asking the movement to walk in solidarity for her, a 70-year-old woman living in the heart of DC, who has spent her entire life in service of others, first as a nurse, like her aunt Harriet, then as a teacher, and who told me last week on a call that she wants to walk but her back is hurting and her body is breaking down from grief, from caregiving, and from stress. Does this sound familiar?

This woman is the daughter of Hazel, who was the daughter of Alyda from Auburn, NY, who was the sister of Aunt Jenny, who was the mother of Mother Pauline Johnson, who opened our season in March at the membership meeting. They are Harriet’s real family, and if we cannot walk in solidarity for Ms. Tina, who is saying please don’t leave me behind, then who can we walk for?

This is what it means to walk in the footsteps of a powerful legacy.

This is what it means to lay down the tracks for a new underground railroad.

This summer is the start of a new year, one where we go deep into community and neighborhood care.

It includes an app to connect us.

It also includes a series of rendezvous points where you can walk and connect with GirlTREK national staff and organizers.  Our first rendezvous point is next Wednesday in Harlem. We walk at sunrise. RSVP here and stay tuned as we announce more locations.

See you on the app?

See you getting your walk on?

See you tracking your streaks and celebrating your success?

See you on the GirlTREK Underground?

It’s live. It’s here. It’s beautiful.

In love,

The GirlTREK Team
