Nominate Someone for GirlTrek’s 2020 Trekker Awards

We are on the eve of a complete victory, preparing to do what so many said couldn’t be done – rally one million Black women to start walking for total healing. This monumental milestone, which we expect to reach by the end of this year will come with all of the fanfare that it deserves, including an entire trek season full of inspiring and beautifully produced campaigns, once in a lifetime events, and epic surprises. We officially kick-off the season on April 1st and at that time the world will be invited to walk and celebrate with us.

But first… We could not start this season, could not do one more piece of work without stopping to say thanks to the women who got us here.

Before we had money to pay ourselves. Before we had a team of advisors. Before The New York Times. Before we could produce reports to show that this thing was working. Before we had proof – when all we could do was tell you a vision and ask you to believe, you did.

You filled your car trunks with superhero blue tablecloths and flyers that you printed and paid for yourself. You turned your social media accounts into GirlTrek advertisements. You saved your money and bought gear. You rode on buses down to Selma, flew to upstate New York, drove to the coast of South Carolina where we held our first leadership training in the living room of a rented house. You faithfully woke up on Saturday mornings to lead walks. You organized teams. You organized your churches. You stopped women in grocery stores and asked them to join the movement. You never missed an opportunity to tell someone — “We walk to heal our bodies, inspire our daughters and reclaim the streets of our neighborhoods."

Your leadership inspired Black women everywhere to reconsider the possibilities of their lives. Your commitment to investing 30-minutes a day in yourself inspired a self-care revolution, and every day more of you join us in this work, and we are in awe of you.

GirlTrek’s entire national staff would like to say thank you to the women of this movement for your tireless dedication to the healing of Black women and we’re going on the road to tell you to your face! An entire month of grassroots organizing dedicated to the women of GirlTrek. You may have already seen us in action. In February we will be popping up at walks, surprising you at your door with special treats, sending you love notes, making phone calls to say thank you — and so much more!
