Our first organizer training. 2012. The shores of South Carolina. I remember Obama got elected to his second term the night we landed. I remember feeling as bold and as audacious as him. I remember we sang “Girl On Fire” loud, much to the chagrin of some. I remember Sandria, standing to the left of Morgan, found out about GirlTREK in Heart and Soul magazine just weeks earlier. I looked it up today and found the original copy of that magazine (because I keep everything). The woman who wrote the article is named Leslie Gordan. I don’t know her or where she is now, or how she found out about us then, but thank you Leslie. You were among the first people to see the spark and fanned the flames.
In her article about women’s fitness groups, Leslie wrote: “GirlTREK, headquartered in Washington D.C., has more than 50,000 followers and more than 10,000 girls and women have committed to walk for at least 30 minutes, five days a week for 10 weeks each year.
In the 12 years since that Heart and Soul article, many things have evolved.
We’ve gone from 10,000 women walking to a membership of over one million. We’ve gone from a 10-week challenge to a sophisticated public health intervention. We’ve gone from a walking group to a movement with the influence, infrastructure, engagement, and, most importantly, the will to now increase the life expectancy of Black women in this country by 10 years in 10 years.
In our membership meeting, we will tell you how we plan to do it. But before we look ahead, this look back at the first crew feels so appropriate.
